Food Service and Retail Establishments
Establishments that sell food and/or beverage products are permitted and inspected by the Elk Grove Village Environmental Health Division. The Division enforces sanitation requirements set by the Illinois State Food Service Sanitation Code. The number of inspections per year is dependant on the establishment’s risk level. *As of January 1st, 2015 all restaurant food handlers, that do not have a current IL Food Service Sanitation Manager's Certificate, are required to complete an ANSI-approved Food Handler Training course. Food handlers are defined as employees who are working with unpackaged food, food equipment/utensils, or food-contact surfaces. Non-Restaurants (i.e. nursing homes, day cares, hospitals, and schools) must meet this requirement by July 1st, 2016. Training certificates are valid for 3 years and should be kept on file at your establishment. Certificates of Excellence
Medium and high risk food service establishments that have received an average of 90% or above on routine inspections are awarded a “Certificate of Excellence” by the Health Division. Click on the links below to view recipients of this certificate.

Food Processors and Warehouse Storage
New food processors and warehouse storage facilities are regulated either by the Illinois Department of Public Health or the Illinois Department of Agriculture depending on the type of food(s) being processed or stored. An Elk Grove Village business license and Health Division opening/approval inspection will be required prior to operation. Construction and remodel projects at these facilities will also require a construction permit, plan review, and building inspection. Food Processor Requirements
New owners looking to open a food service establishment within the Village should start with a zoning application from the Community Development Department. After approval, the owner may then apply for a business license through the Finance Department. New construction or interior renovation will require a construction permit and plan review. New owners submitting plans must also complete and return the Health Division's "Plan Review Form". The Health Inspectors will need to conduct a pre-opening (approval for food storage) and opening (approval to operate) inspection.
New owners looking to take over an existing business must apply for a business license and complete a Health Permit Application. You will then be contacted by the Health Inspector to schedule a change of ownership inspection.

Temporary Food Events
Operators of indoor or outdoor temporary events that offer the sale of food and/or beverages to the public are required to complete the Health Division's "Temporary Food Event" Application Form prior to the event’s starting date. ***Please note that event coordinators may also be required to submit a "Special Event Application." For more information about this application, please contact the Village Manager's Office.
All mobile vending trucks that operate in Elk Grove Village must be inspected and permitted by the Environmental Health Division. Driver’s will be required to complete the "Application and Route Map". They will receive a driver’s card that corresponds to the permit number on the vehicle sticker. Permits expire on May 31st each calendar year. OPERATORS MAY ONLY SELL INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED FOOD PRODUCT THAT IS PREPARED IN A LICENSED COMMISSARY, NO OPEN FOOD PRODUCT WILL BE ALLOWED. A commissary inspection report shall be provided at the time of the vehicle’s inspection. In addition, all vehicles must be equipped with a mechanical refrigeration system and/or warming unit.
